Speech recognition software converts spoken words into text. It is most often for transcription and as an alternative way of using a computer. It is a technology that is developing quickly as becomes used mobile phones and video games.

A microphone is used to capture the speech. A USB microphone is recommended to increase accuracy. The accuracy rate is high in optimal conditions. Background noise can cause the software to make mistakes and the accuracy can drop down to 50%. The software is suitable for people with learning difficulties that find writing difficult and people with mobility disabilities that keep them from writing. There is one main commercially available package called DragonSpeak.
